Rut-Depth

Rutting is formed along pavement wheelpaths under repeated traffic loading. The rut depth is a measure of the depth of this deformation in the transverse pavement profile. Rutting can be a safety hazard because it can cause steering instability of vehicles, they collect water during wet weather, which can lead to skidding or hydroplaninig in wet weather.

A rut depth exceeding 25mm is generally regarded as an indicator of a road section that has structural distress.
